Crowning Glory: Exploring the stories of black hair and skin

SEEN. Barnardos, 2025

Barnardo’s SEEN commissioned ClearView Research to explore the hair and skin care experiences of Black children and young people in the UK—especially those in care or youth institutions. The project aimed to highlight inequalities and create meaningful change.

Using a participatory approach, we conducted surveys, exploration labs, and expert-led discussions to gather insights.

Key Findings

  • Community support networks are essential for the well-being of Black children and young people.

  • Access to suitable products is a challenge, particularly for those living in rural areas.

  • Natural, sulphate-free hair products are strongly preferred by Black children and young people.

  • Hair and skin are key aspects of identity, shaping confidence and self-expression.
